Chitra’s dance education started at the age of 7 and was nurtured by many educators, institutions, and communities. Chitra deeply believes in the power of culture to express and share your story. Intentional relationship building, presence, consistent participation, learning, and taking risks are all practices she embeds within her work and life. Chitra has been teaching dance for all ages and levels for over 17 years in DC. For over a decade she managed a DC-based nonprofit youth organization, Mentors of Minorities in Education (M.O.M.I.E’s), that implements the teaching of history and social justice to young children. The impact of years of relationship-building with families, young people, elders, educators, and institutions is something Chitra carries with her throughout her dance journey.
